Parents should agree with the philosophy of teachers and schools, their child is attending and be active in the child's school lives.

What I've learned in 4 years at Auburn University.
Taking Human Development and Family Studies and Early Childhood Education courses has help me realize what seemed like common sense, really was not. I now notices different family functions and dynamics, paying attention to details of people. Their personality, process of thinking and working things out, and aspects of their lives I have no ties to are brought to my attention when I think about a students as a whole person. I think a great teacher needs to be observant, adaptable, and skillful to know what individual students need, know what to provide for the child to understand a concept in an efficient method, and how to apply what you need to do for the child. With all this in mind, the teacher has to think about the need of the whole class. Some concepts I've learned that is helpful for young children are simply and critical, such as dealing with social problems, beginning to read, and training to have an intrinsic motivation to discover and learn to become an active lifelong learner.
My Experience with Children:
My story begins during my elementary years, I got to work with and enjoy my times working with children at the youth group at my church. A few years ago by and I'm in middle school helping my friends with their math homework. I thought I was the smartest kid in class, but as I was explaining to my friends about the process of finding the answer, I come to a realization that teaching my friends helped me develop a better understanding of the math objectives. A few years pass and senior year of high school, my calculus teacher made a comment, "Jieun, you should think about becoming a math teacher." Three years into the Auburn University life, I chose to apply for the College of Education - Early Childhood Education. One of our requirements was to shadow a teacher (for me, second grade) for five days. I loved every hour I was at the school. My favorite day was when I was given the opportunity to work with a student on her math assignment. She was having trouble understanding how to add double digit numbers. I tried my best to explain how adding work and what the double digits symbolized. Thankfully, SHE GOT IT. Something clicked and she was able to do some of the problems on her own. It was the most gratifying feeling I've ever felt. I was so proud of myself. That was the moment I knew for sure, I wanted to become a teacher and be respected in the professional field of education.
I may have not worked with a large group of students, yet. However, I am confident that I will give my students what they need and have success in my career as a teacher. I believe what I am learning from my professors and the experiences I am given in this program will prepare me for what's to come in a real classroom setting.

Tutoring:
This year is the first year I've been tutoring others professionally. I started because one of my classes required us to work one-on-one with students from a near by elementary school.
A family friend come to me and asked what she could do for her child because she was teased by other students for not being able to speak English.

Volunteering:
Spring 2014 - Fall 2015
I began volunteering at True Deliverance for Diversity of Learners and Settings class assignment and loved my time working with the students. I continued to volunteer Fall 2014 semester. We, tutors, help students with homework, studying for tests, as well as enjoying the last 15 mins of the session playing board games and listen to the stories the students may have in stored for us. I found that I was concerned about different things the first semester I volunteered and the current semester. I worried about simply being a tutor because it was a new experience for me. I have helped my friends in the past with homework or explaining a single topics but never in an official setting. After getting used to the position, I had less pressure and enjoyed tutoring this semester. I care more about the students' overall well being. I would like to see them move up from each grade and succeed to the best of their abilities.

October 2014 - March 2015
For my Professional Development and Ethics class, I had to volunteer 25 hrs to experience a setting where I could possible work. For me, the Auburn Public Library is a place where I can find resources to incorporate what I find to aid my lessons as an elementary teacher. I have worked with majority of the different departments of the library: assisting the circulation desk, youth services, and technological services. Knowing the ins and outs, as well as, being exposed to the many literature helped me expand my own library. Doing so, I can suggest books to students and guide them to search for stories and topics they find interest, giving them choices and giving them the freedom to read what they want, which is one step closer for students to possibly becoming a life-long learner.
